5 tips for finding a new job during the coronavirus pandemic

5 tips for finding a new job during the coronavirus pandemic

The process of looking for a job has changed. We’ve created this list you can use to increase your job search during and after COVID-19

If you’ve lost your job, are looking for a new position or are soon going to be entering the labor force after graduating college, here’s five steps to prepare for a competitive labor market.

1. Keep an open mind on pay and be flexible on other benefits

Be sure to keep in mind other benefits that can also impact your finances, such as employer-based retirement plans and health insurance. And don’t decline a job just because it isn’t offering what you’d like it to pay you. This period of weak wage growth should eventually pass, and when the labor market picks back up again, you’ll be able to hop around for higher pay if you still feel like you’re not getting adequately compensated.

2. Make your application computerized and utilize job-search sites

Stay up to date with what’s out there for you by utilizing technology, which has dramatically changed the way employers look for jobs and potential employees.

Update your LinkedIn profile to network with recruiters and potential colleagues. Use job-search websites to find more positions that you might not see in your immediate geographical area.

3. Keep an open mind to new opportunities

Finding a job right now requires a lot of persistence and patience, and that might mean taking a position outside of your preferred area, just to get you by.

The pandemic has already lead to many new types of jobs, such as contact tracers and temperature checkers. Consider applying for those emerging jobs, and find ways to transfer over your current skills and experience.

And in the meantime, get creative about finding work, if you need more financial support. Consider taking a freelance or temporary job.

4. Update your skills

The skills and traits companies are looking for are changing. One thing that COVID-19 has highlighted is the need for people with technology skills. It’s also put a spotlight on the importance for companies to have people who have resolve. People who are flexible, adaptable, and have strong change management skills are in high demand. Highlight these skills and traits on your resume and job application.

5. Expand the types of jobs you’re interested in

The role you may have wanted or been interested in before the pandemic may not be available. Or it may be very different from what it was. Consider casting a wider net. Be open to different roles that you are well suited to. Perhaps it’s worth looking for similar roles in a different industry. Be flexible.

Looking for a job always has its challenges. COVID-19 has made it even more challenging. Staying consistent, leveraging your network, and adapting to the changing work world is the key to make yourself the right candidate for the job.

In the same way, if you are on the other side and you are thinking of hiring employers, there are several tips to keep in mind. In the next article we will tell you more, but meanwhile you can visit our website and start learning about a very beneficial way to expand your company in times of Covid.
